Secretariat (March 30, 1970 -- October 4, 1989) was an American Thoroughbred racehorse, that in 1973 became the first U.S. Triple Crown champion in twenty-five years, setting new race records in two of the three events in the Series—the Kentucky Derby (1:592⁄5), and the Belmont Stakes (2:24)—records that still stand today.

  • i just cried.

  • Secretariat had a tremendously large heart, inherited from his dam's side on the X chromosome (the X-Factor), which gave him all that thrust and power on the track. His trainer knew this colt was special and needed those monster workouts before races in order to perform. A freak of nature and a horse like no other.

  • @rcschumann - I think you hit on the nailhead.

What a wonderful Beast of a Horse!

    Wow!

Now, I'm curious... what's the names of some of his offspring?

  • Loved the documentary.

  • Secretariat was tested over and over and over in every form of testing known, no steroids! I have cared for Secretariats Great Grandaughter and you have to experience Honey to believe her she looks like Secretariat and has his champion spirit and its something you only can feel! He was the greatest horse ever!

  • :")

  • Awww...Big Red passed away the year before I was born. If he were still around and when I'd finally had grasped my great love for Horses as I do to this day, I'd try to hug him. But he'd probably yell at me for it. XP RIP Big Red.
