Final part of film about life in a Soto Zen Buddhist monastry in Yokohama in 1959 taken by Ijsbrand Michael Rogge. As to the novices smoking. Remember that this was filmed at a time that practically everyone smoked - the dangers were not widely known. I have never smoked, though, as informed people knew of the dangers to health.
