Some breathing and moving exercises that you can practice before doing downward dog so that you can get use to feeling your ribs, shoulders and neck reaching up, away from your pelvis.
When doing downward do you can look for the same feeling of lengthening but instead of your hands moving away from your pelvis, your pelvis moves away from your hands.
Also, instead of your shoulders moving towards your ears, your head moves towards your shoulders. Or you could think of it as your entire spine moves away from your hands.
