Thats a hard Question... because it works different for everyone. I personally don't start to compose the actual Song before I know the Story behind it, what I want to "tell" with the Song. And then I usually try to come up with a Main Melody. After that I "paint" the whole Rest of the Song around the Main Theme and the Story I have in my Head. Try not to lose Focus on what your Song is about, thats a good Tip I guess, because otherwise it will end up confusing and unstable.
