Introduction to SCA Armored Combat

SCA Armored combat, also called "heavy combat", is a full contact martial art where the participants wear real armor and fight with weapons made from rattan instead of steel. There are no judges or referees, all combatants are trained to acknowledge the blows that hit them in what is called "honor based combat". If a blow strikes cleanly and with sufficient force on the person being struck, they call themselves out of the fight.

All combat within the Kingdom is under the purview of the Earl Marshal.

Armored combat participants can fight in single combat tournaments, multiple person melees, and mass combat wars. Weapon, shield and armor styles can vary widely as long as they conform to the Combat Standards of the Kingdom of the West.

Armored combat is a trained skill. Just reading the rules will not give you a true understanding of how it is done. The best way to learn more about Armored Combat is to attend a fighter practice, a branch meeting, or a fighting event.
Introduction to SCA Missle Combat
Missle combatants participate in wars, and are not allowed in tournament or melee scenarios. They are armored to the same standards as heavy combatants but employ bows, crossbows and other missle weapons in support of their side.
If you are interested in non-combat missles, such as target archery, the Royal Archers are here to help you.
Introduction to SCA Rapier Combat
SCA rapier combat is a full contact, honor based, martial art. Unlike the heavy combat, we use steel weapons, masks, and padded armor that resembles everyday medieval or renaissance costumes. All rapier combat within the Kingdom is under the purview of the Kingdom Rapier Marshal, who is a deputy of the Earl Marshal. Like the armored combatants, those who wish to participate in rapier can fight in single combat tournaments, multiple person melees, and mass combat wars. Equipment can vary widely as long as they conform to the Rapier Combat Standards of the Kingdom of the West. Please come attend a local practice, meeting, or event to find out more!
Introduction to Kingdom of the West Youth Combat
Youth Combat is for the training and mentoring of young adults ages 10 to 15 who are ready for the challenge of Armored Combat. The emphasis of the youth program is to learn SAFETY, chivalry, honor, courtesy and proper martial technique as a stepping-stone to the heavy list field. Just like the adult program, Youth Combat participants are required to wear real amour and fight with rattan according to the Kingdom of the West combat standards. Youth trainers and marshals are more proactive in helping guide and insure the safety of the youth combatants. As with all young adult activities, parents are a necessary part of the equation and are encouraged to take an active role in the program by attending all events that their child are participating in and providing additional support for the Youth Combat program. The Youth Combat program is under the purview of the Earl Marshal and as such conforms to the Combat Standards of the Kingdom of the West with some additional rules for Youth Combat. For more information on Youth Combat, please contact the Youth Combat Deputy or the Kingdom Earl Marshal.
