Let me answer (after so long, if you get this msg, reply plz). The summer palace is for the emperors to escape to during summer time, when the weather is very hot. Like a European monarch's many castles. A place to escape from the bustle of the capital, I guess.

Yiheyuan is spectacular of course but it's just a shame that the empress dowager decided to spend the whole navy budget on her summer palace instead of buying much needed navy ships to protect China from the invading countries.
Beautiful spot though, the long corridor is amazing.

The greatest monument built by the The Great Manchus was the Yun Ming Yuan., but unfortunately it was destroyed and looted by the marauding british and french soldiers.

Another great monument built by the Great Manchus was the Jeng De resort in North eastern China.

Forbidden city was built by hans, but the Yiheyuan was built by the Great Manchus.

sry to ask this ... wad is a summer palace ? isit a part of forbidden city ? but forbidden city ish a kind of rectangular shape and why is this look lik a open spacce ?

It's sad that the legendary summer palace is just a shell of what it once was thanks to destructive British and French. People are amazed at the Forbiden City but from what I understand the old summer palace put that to shame.
