He's looking into the viewfinder of his twin lens reflex (Rolieflex) camera, so he's looking pretty carefully at what's going on, you can see the camera as he turns away after taking the shot.

Watching films like this make me wonder sometimes who took their lives in their own hands more. The drivers or the trackside spectators and marshals?
