actually a ranger can be ranged or they can dual wield and get right up into combat. As for role playing, any system can be a "role" playing system. Most playing in character and story development is independent of the rule set. 4th edition is just as good for role playing as any of the previous editions.

4th edition isnt crap, it is just very different from 3rd and 3.5. this is because the old editions had an eaquel mix of roleplaying and fighting, but 4th edition is more about fighting. also, the new edition is different in the sense that 3.5 all classes had specific roles, but in 4th edition, you get way more static. no more ranged fighter, or aragorn ranger, from now on, it is TANK FIGHTER and STAY BACK RANGER, that is also what the classes are now, tanks, ranged, or buffer/tanks.
