Ask the Adobe Ones - 35: Tad bit 64-bit

Hey, this is kush with Ask the Adobe ones. As you might have noticed I failed to release this week's episode on monday because I was really busy. And no I didn't get a big fat bonus curtsy of the taxpayers for that failure but, I'll try to get back on track again, so today we'll talk a little bit about the big bits, all 64 of them!

Phixon and a few others asked me about how well Adobe tools work on 64-bit operating systems. Some of them also asked if there is any advantage at all running CS4 apps on 64-bit machines. Well, it really depends on which application and what you do with it and the specifications of your computer itself.

First of all, 64-bit is not a linear coolness factor that makes your programs run better. The most noteworthy aspect of it is that you can utilize larger amounts of ram compared to 32-bit environments. This only makes a difference if your computer has large amounts of RAM to begin with. When I say large amounts I mean more than 4 Gigs, perhaps much more like 8 or 32. For example applications that you use to just read e-mails or play music, hopefully won't use that much RAM in practice anyway. I sure hope you don't have friends who send 10Giga byte e-mail attachments of several months long techno re-mixes. But lets say you are a photographer who process Giga pixel panoramic photos of Nerpa seals, a 64-bit OS coupled with a generous serving of RAM could make a huge difference so you won't wait hours for the computer to swap memory to disk while redrawing or color correcting those gigantic Nerpa shots.

In fact, Adobe Photoshop Light room 2 has been natively 64-bit both on Windows AND Macs since a long time ago so yes, you would definitely see a performance improvement if you go 64-bit with that when dealing with large amounts of very large photos. Photoshop CS4 is also 64-bit on windows and a mac version of 64-bit Photoshop is also planned. But the tricky part is what about other applications like Premiere Pro CS4 and After Effects CS4? Well, they are not natively 64-bit applications BUT - that's a big but - if you got all the latest updates installed they both can in fact take advantage of having large amounts of RAM on 64-bit operating systems like vista-64 or OSX on mactels. In some tests, depending on what format of video processed, the performance increased from 50 to more than 200% simply by switching to 64-bit. Again, the improvements are more dramatic when handling large chunks of data such as the case with Red footage.

You can find more information about 64-bit optimization of Creative Suite 4 Production Premium on this URL or by downloading the file linked to this video on adobe tv. If you follow blogs by other more reputable Adobe experts, you can also find a lot more detailed explanations about how to take advantage of CS4 tools that are optimized and architected for 64-bit operating systems.

Alright so that's about it, and if you have any bit of doubt about anything related to Adobe products, you know what to do, just send in your video question links or e-mails to ask@adobe.com architected to connect you with the Adobe ones.

Yes I said video link because I don't want my e-mail program to use 10gigs of RAM to read it. No not even if its a cute Nerpa seal video.
