This Southern Pacific Locomotive ran the Coast Daylight route between Los Angeles and San Francisco in the early 1940s. The engine was retired in 1957. After years on display in Portland, Oregon, the engine was fully restored in the 1970s. Today it runs limited tours in the Pacific Northwest. This footage of the 4449 is passing by Bend, Oregon heading back to Portland, Oregon, after an overnight stay in Bend. All the train cars have been fully restored, including the two California Zephyr Cars on the end. Update note: The 4449 has a new website at www.4449.com. And they will get a new $3.5 million home to house the train, but looking for donations to help. Check their website today for details.

  • Interesting note from the SP4449 Twitter about trip going east: "People complain of train horns. City installs "no horn zones". Steam engine runs thru (town), people mad they can't hear steam whistle. Go figure!"

  • SP4449 is traveling back east now! You can follow it on Twitter. Just look up SP4449.

  • That is exciting!

  • @BIGT6851 Anywhere from ten to twenty. The Daylights were very popular trains in the forties, and made Southern Pacific a lot of money.

  • What a nice long train with so diff. coaches - int. for European viewers like me. Thanks!

  • What an awsome engine, I just love Steam Locamotives.

  • I was wondering

how many train cars did the 4449 pull back in the 1940s?

  • I got shots of the Daylight in Owosso as well. I traveled all the way from Carson City, Nevaa to Owosso & it was quite an amazing site to see.

  • but even then...

  • You were right the first time... The 1225 is a beautiful engine. The 4449 is, well, a rare collision of art and industrial design...

  • I'am going to see her tomorrow in Owossow, MI at the train fest, suppose to be at least 8 steam engines on display and giving rides.

  • I saw the 4449 at Owosso, MI yesterday. What an incredible machine!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You won't see many things in life more awesome than the 4449 (unless maybe the Pere Marquette 1225 that was also there in Owosso)
