Hopefully this will help if you need to blur either a person or section out of the screen using Vegas Video. Other programs may have similar options, but this is just a general idea of one way to do it. The second way to have the same basic effect is to use a bar in the upper window that you would manipulate to cover the section of the screen you want blocked out.

Also, you may want to adjust the blur options to make it more or less blurred in your section. For Crazy Cat Pete it was harder to blur him out because he was pretty much a solid color other than his nose but with people it should be easier because there is more contrast in the facial features.

On a slightly different note. To those of you who want to make tutorial videos, I have been using a combination of Camtasia Studio and Vegas Video to create these clips. Rendering is perhaps the hardest part because of YT's limited video quality and the 100mb file size limit.

So far the best combination of rendering settings I've come up with is to render as WMV 3mb at 320x240. The MOV file format works well also but the the file size is much bigger. This file was about 18mb after rendering as WMV, where as, an MOV file with slightly better quality was 97mb. As MPG2 it was also about 97mb with lower quality, and an AVI was 133mb with the best quality output (very easy to read text and clear picture).

I only mention this because it really is important to try different output settings when dealing with YT. Anytime you are doing a project with a screen capture the TEXT that you captured tends to look really bad after you rerender.

The original Camtasia capture was 133mb before editing to add the zoom effects, which was still to big to post on YT.

Special thanks to MattHawes and TheHappyShow for allowing me to use Crazy Cat Pete for this tutorial.

  • Thanks. I just watched one of your tutorials with the TV effects. It was excellent. I love how clear your tutorial capture is too. It was easy to follow along and I bet others will like how you explained it. Keep of the great work.

  • what program did you use? also the crazy cat thing is corny lol

  • This was done with Sony Vegas Video and yes, the cat is corny.

  • What if the person moves his head to the other side of the screen, away from the censor? Does that mean I have to do the whole thing over again every time the person moves!?

  • Yes, you would have to follow the section of the screen you want blurred out unless you wanted to blur everything on the screen.
