Dave Letterman clip from his first morning show, on its 15th anniversary June 23, 1995, and reaction. Note that even within the clip there is a clip of an earlier show Clover Power, and contemporaneous reaction -- Interesting and somewhat disorienting.

Later, as a guest on short lived rival (11:30pm time slot) Jon Stewart Show, supporting the host on his final show, Dave supplies a clip of his last morning show. Dave also supplies good words about media politics, success and failure using himself as an example to cheer up the canceled Jon Stewart. Like history repeating itself recently, only with different names.

  • when does letterman go on other people's show. When Conan's show was struggling, when Jon Stewart was about to be cancelled, the man is class.

  • @buzzarlett LETTERMAN IS CLASS! even without the cigars. Actually this appearance on Stewart show (original show, I forget what network) was Stewart's last (original) "Jon Stewart show". That is why his comments are so endearing in retrospect.

  • The great Harve Mann appears at 4:10 doing his Lounge Singer Character!

  • @sean991000 that's funny. Who is Harve Mann exactly?

  • wow how very prophetic of letterman to say that things will become better for jon.

  • @ctrlaltdestroy91 Amazing! I love Letterman!

  • Dave was a fairly well known TV personality in Indianapolis (weekend weatherman, movie host, etc.) and his then-wife had a good paying job. But in 1975 both gave up their jobs to go to Los Angeles. They divorced in 1979 after Dave had some success and started, as he admitted, "behaving badly".

    Interesting...........thanks!

  • @at1212b

    Interesting.........thank you!

Letterman was willing to do it. But once he knew that Leno was taking another timeslot, he didn't want to do it.

  • He must have really liked Jon Stewart and or saw some real talent him, because Letterman doesn't really do too many of these type of interviews.

  • @TVGuido

Exactly. If that was Leno, he would have done everything to bury any potential competitors or peers.

  • "I know the same is in store for you".

Good call, Dave. I remember watching this when it aired and be ultimately sad that Stewart was canceled as I wanted him to succeed so badly. 16 years later, I am very glad I can laugh at that as he is now a household name.

  • Hmmm.......wonder if Dave will make an appearance on Jay Leno's final show, whenever that might be......

  • @TVGuido The show was on MTV
