The 404 or Not Found error message is an HTTP standard response code indicating that the client was able to communicate with the server but either the server could not find what was requested, or it was configured not to fulfill the request and did not reveal the reason why. 404 errors should not be confused with "server not found" or similar errors, in which a connection to the destination server could not be made at all.

Stellen Sie sich vor Sie treffen auf eine Seite, die Sie sehr interessiert, z.B.
www.beispiel.com/user/~ultra/dir/Neverhome.html. Sie klicken auf den Link, aber kommt eine Fehlermeldung: "Error 404, Seite nicht gefunden".

Der wahrscheinlichste Fall ist, daß die html-Seite umbenannt oder gelöscht wurde, das Verzeichnis ~ultra/dir/ aber noch existiert. Versuchen Sie es also mit der Eingabe
www.beispiel.com/user/~ultra/dir/.

Wenn das immer noch einen Error ergibt, dann können Sie es versuchen mit
www.beispiel.com/user/~ultra/.
So können Sie es weiterversuchen bis nur noch die eigentliche Domain (www.beispiel.com) übrig bleibt.
