Watch Jim Tolpin flatten an Alder board using handplanes. He uses scrub plane, a jackplane with an 8" radius camber, and a try plane (or jointer plane). Those are wax pencils he uses to markup during the process.

This is a trail video - we plan to work with a local high school to produce better video soon

  • @gerbschmitt If the board is that badly cupped. I'd recommend that you rip the board in half. Flatten the two boards and then edge joint and glue back together. Do it carefully and only a good eye will spot the join. Good luck.

I dont really want to to plane that cup out as that would make the board very thin. it is for a plank floor and will be face nailed down. i just want to make 3/4 thickness all around. do i need to clamp board down when planing?i hope i am describing correctly. i have some boards that are so bad that if you simply layed the

  • Nice, someday I hope to be able to do that
