They DID know each other and certainly Weingartner saw Brahms conduct. Really a link to the past, no?
But be sure to listen to Max Fiedler conduct this work as well (He too knew Brahms--even better) That performance will excite some and infuriate others.

This director must have seen the great maestro Brahms in person, perhaps conducting this symphony himself!! Isn't that unbelievable???

Finally! Brahms with balls! Everybody begins this symphony delicately and hesitantly; to hell with that school! This is the right balance!
