  • Rome = Gladiator with more brain.

Spartacus = 300 with less brain.

  • Most Memorable Series Opening - Whoever conceived desugbed and brought this opening into existence is a very, very talented man.

  • @firebreeze That is, I wonder if Picasso wasn't subconsciously inspired by Roman graffiti. :) Take my musings with a grain of salt though, I'm an ex-Classics student, not an art history major.

  • I love the graffiti credits - they just abound with all these references, really brilliant. Like Asclepius at 0:49, followed by Minerva (Athena) springing forth from Jupiter's (Zeus') head, the she-wolf suckling Romulus and Remus, and I think there may even be a nod earlier at 0:11 to the Rape of Lucretia but that could be geeky me extrapolating. Still, this whole sequence is very creative. :)

By the way, isn't the bull's head at 1:01 kind of reminiscent of one of the Guernica bulls?

  • Thanks for your response!

  • @surfaburfa I suspect it's the city's calendar, and the woman is actually removing a stone carving from one niche and placing it in the next, showing the passage of the days and months. The letters on the wall are consistent with Ancient Roman Calendars as well. I'm not sure if Rome actually had a fancy carved calendar like this (usually they were just painted), but it's cool nonetheless.

  • At around 1:16 on this video, you see several small boxes or indentations on a wall. People appear to drop things in them, like in a mailbox. Anyone know what these are? Boxes for prayers? Thanks!

  • I love the series and the music

  • The best credits ever made! Outstanding! Great music also.

  • @resistingreader Thanks, man! I had initially thought it was just an apotropaic symbol, like the Medusa. I feel enlightened today! :)

  • @Manchuriancandidate It's a copy of the memento mori mosaic, from Pompeii. It's a symbol of life and death, the soul, fortune, wealth and power all balancing on the wheel of fortune. "The theme was intended to remind diners of the fleeting nature of earthly fortunes.", according to Stefano De Caro, The National Archaeological Museum of Naples.
