@ned262626 No where does Jesus say that we have to live as virgins in order to live as He did. Peter, the first Pope, was married, as were the other disciples. For the first thousand years of Christianity Popes, Bishops. and Priests were married. Mandatory celibacy was instituted in the Roman Church during the Middle Ages to prevent clergy from handing on Church property to their children. Today's Church allows former Episcopal Priests to become Catholic Priests with wives/kids. Inconsistent.

@rickw1100 really, didn't Jesus die as a 33 year old virgin?
i guess its nuts to think that someone who wants to live as Christ did would actually live like Christ did
-
Celibacy is a traditional and practical matter that can be changed, but it came after there was more trouble with married priests.
-
The Roman Catholic Church's loss- is the Episcopal Church's gain. Celibacy is a man made rule that should be changed.

So many fanatical fundamentalists.... Do you ever look at your own clergy and their HIDDEN CRIMINAL BEHAVIOR? Father Cutie is a man of God!

@jackam10 So wait, so the notion of the mother of Jesus having sexual intercourse with her husband to conceive children as is NATURAL & normal as God created it is a "sin" ...she could've have 20 sexually conceived children and still kept pure. This notion of celibacy and demonizing of sex didn't come from the Jews but from the pagans. An only child to a Jewish couple would've struck as odd back then.
As it was important to have many children just for survival.

@NativeNewYorkGuy Why does it matter? Because Mary is the *Virgin* Mary-pure and without sin.
I wasn't going to say anything about cousin meaning the same as brother in Aramaic; do we not refer to each other as brothers and sisters in Christ? The idea that we are all brothers and sisters is not foreign to the Gospels and Jesus' example.

@queenofsheba1000 Why should that be any of your business dear?

@clarkbailey1973 Well, he's not anymore! That's why he saw the light and joined the Episcopal Church.

@clarkbailey1973 Saint Paul was celibate and he seems to have had a few issues of his own. Celibacy was practiced by the ancient Church...another non Jewish practice it absorbed from the surrounding religions of the Mediterranean basin. Celibacy can be a good thing, and great for spiritual growth if voluntarily embraced and practiced. To force it is counter productive.
Nothing wrong with married clergy, it works well in many other Christian traditions.
TEC is lucky to have him.

Too bad the catholic church did not just move him like they did the priest who abused little boys for all those years, guess sex with and adult is worse...
