Chapter 47

[Shaeas POV]

Uh, Shaea, are you ready to leave? Nick asked from the door. He was wearing his skinny jeans, green converse, and a white t-shirt. So simple and yet so stunning.
Yea, I said, animatedly, jumping up from the bed.
I grabbed my blackberry and slid it into my back pocket, and followed Nick to his car.
The first few minutes were awkward, like all of our recent encounters, just listening to John Mayer buzz in the background.
So, whered you want to go? Nick asked me.
I didnt really think about that I said shyly, looking at my knotted fingers. Why am I so nervous being alone with Nick so suddenly?
So you just suddenly had the urge to hang out with me? He said, laughing. Oh what a beautiful sound.
Wellyea. You want to go to the lake? The lake was not that far from the house by car. It was beautiful, surrounded by all sorts of greenery. It was a nice place to come and think; often, Nick would go and write his songs there.
Nick nodded and began quietly driving to the lake. Since it wasnt a long ride, there wasnt much to say. We just hummed to John Mayer, Nicks fingers drumming against the steering wheel with the rhythm.

The lake was beautiful; the water was clear blue and the weather just right. The grass was purely green, and the trees danced in the light breeze. The lake sat between an empty meadow of just grass. Then, as it inched out, trees bordered the meadow, hiding it from the rest of the place. Not many people came here; but awkwardly the ones who did come here came for illegal and impure reasons- if you know what I mean. (wink wink)
Nick and I went and sat by the lake, dipping out feet in the water. We listened quietly to the sound of a bird singing in a tree close by. Pure serenity
Why are we fighting, Shaea? Nick asked, suddenly. When I looked at him, I could see the hurt in his eyes. His mouth was set in a frown as he waited for my answer.
Because weve changed Nick. Both you and I have lost ourselves, I said quietly. It was true; this was as much my fault as his.
HowI mean when? Where did this happen? He asked confused. It was like he suffered from amnesia.
When Johanna moved in, Nick, you changed. You snapped at all of us, you forgot any of us existed. Frankie began to believe you hate him. How do you explain to a child why his brother is ignoring him for agirl? You ignored requests from your parents, simple things like Mow the lawn because you were busy satisfying your girlfriend. Then, the moment I stood up against you or Johanna, when she clearly insulted me, it was like only then you noticed me. Id call out for you Nick, but youd never listen. The moment Id mess up, your ears perked up and you started screaming. I dont know when that change happened Nick, but I didnt like it. And then last night what was that about?
He was quiet, a frown permanent to his features. He was looking down at the grass, plucking at it as he listened to his mistakes. But, when I spoke, Shaea, you stopped listening, too. You never listened to what I have to say. Last night, I was taking care of you his voice was a whisper.
Nick, if you cant listen to me, why would you think Id listen to you? I lightly challenged.
He looked up and smiled at me, Same old stubborn Shaea.
I laughed at the sudden change. Youre talking as though I went away, Nick.
Grief suddenly replaced that one-second happiness in his eyes. You didI lost you.
