Angus Ferguson forever rests, buried on a nearby hill in this abandoned cemetery at Sweetwater Creek State Park.

According to Information at Douglasville Georgia's Douglas County Courthouse: Angus Ferguson, was a surveyor who helped to map Cherokee Territory in 1832, He built this mill around 1841. The mill was Located about 3/4 of a mile north of the New Manchester Factory on Sweet Water Creek. Factory Shoals Road lead down to Ferguson's Crossing and later a bridge which stood until the early 1970s.

The original building known as Ferguson's Merchants Mills was a water powered saw mill and grist mill only. It was burned on July 9, 1864 by elements of the Illinois and Kentucky Cavalry because Angus Ferguson had supplied materials to build the New Manchester textile mill about a mile down stream. The building in the photograph was built after the Civil War by Ferguson and former slaves of the area who were friendly to Angus Ferguson, because he had treated slaves well prior to the Civil War and the Emancipation Proclamation. After Ferguson's death, the property was purchased by a man named Austell who turned it into the first electric power plant in the area and supplied electricity to the City of Austell.
