  • andrew's sisters !

  • no this is not HARRY BELAFONTES .... DISRESPECT DELETE IT ...

  • This isn't Harry Belafonte!

  • why is it that when someone grabs a track by a north american artist and adds a soca or chutney or reggae or whatever track overlay, it's a "remix" but if an artist not from the caribbean does their own version of a caribbean song, it's plagiarism and theft? just wondering.

  • 0 dislikes!!! finally. some awesome listeners :D

  • @TriniIntel This is not to take away from the very strong presence that Roaring Lion, Growling Tiger, Invader, etcetera had during the Golden Age, but it is undeniable that Belafonte had kept calypso (or at least the name, as he mostly sang in a mento style - influenced by calypso) in the US mainstream somewhat even after the Golden Age of Calypso had come to an end.

  • @jeffpnelson Belafonte is reviled by many for stealing songs from Trinidadian calypsonians (among other artists).

What they fail to realise is that in time, Belafonte made amends with many he stole from. For example, he opened doors for Sparrow in the US. He gave Melody money and Melo toured with him.

While it does not absolve him completely as it was wrong to do so in the first place, there is a certain amount of thanks some of us give him for keeping calypso in the mainstream.

  • VERY VERY GOOD !!! BEAUTIFUL !!!

  • It's not Harry Belafonte who performs this song, but the Islanders!

  • Ok, I see your point. I am open-minded. You are saying that even though Trinidadians have the knowledge of Calypso, we lacked the social skills of an artiste to market it well, like the Jamaicans/Bob Marley did with reggae?
