There are several different brands of Heat Pumps and A/C you can have installed at your home. Brands such as Trane, Rheem/Ruud, Lennox, etc are all top brands and are some of the more reliable.
However at the very bottom of the spectrum is the brand Goodman (and Janitrol). These are substandard poorly built rattle traps that are usually associated with the low bidder, small time HVAC contractor, or slum lord.

These units were commonly installed in the Phoenix area on new tract homes along with builder grade Trane and Carrier units. However the Goodman line had the highest failure rate, many times more than the Trane and Carrier failure rate combined!

Typical problems were bad (stack relay) blower relays that failed in approx. 75% of the heat pumps until they finally stopped using them about 3 years ago. However the condenser fan motors still don't last any longer than about 3 years in our sun and the cap tubes (refrigerant tubing) in the heat pump condenser units would have about a 75% failure rate as well, and usually in the 1st through 3rd year.
The problem was so bad a few years ago that the many home owner associations leaned on the builder who then leaned on the installing contractor to extend the labor warranty by a few extra years.

In the video you will see the typical daily repairs I performed in an 5 square mile area I called "Goodman Country". Yeah there were sections of homes with Tranes and Carriers in the nearby area, but Goodman failures were many, MANY times higher and these same repairs are all I did day in and day out for a few years. Same repairs on the same streets in the same neighborhoods!

It was so bad that when diagnosed the unit, the customer wouild say "it better not be those cap tubes leaking..." before I even told her my diagnoses!

Neighbors talk when 50+% of them have the same problems!

  • Goodmans are junk....dont forget the boards on 80% downflows, or the heat exchangers that last 8-10 years, but alot of the problems arise from the shitbag companies that put them in, im a NATE Certified Tech, and ive seen some downright SCARY installs.....Soft soldered refrigerant lines, burnt up valves, not purging with nitrogen, incorrect metering devices, overcharged, undercharged, not wiring low voltage correctly,etc...... But Goodmans are pretty shitty.....

The boys at Chainsaw Charlie in Phoenix were known to just open the king valves on new installs without even vacuuming the system!

I guess that's what they had to do when the company gave the techs TWELVE start ups per day when the housing market boomed.

So sad when I witnessed that.

  • @hackfreehvac yeah, I go behind other companies everyday, and the things I see would make the hair on the back of your neck stand up!! Just this week, went on a water leak call..the company who installed the 90% Goodman a few yrs back had ran the 2" pvc flue in the bottom of a 5/4/3 B Vent "tee" (that the hot water tank was still vented into) so, where the 3' feed came into the 5" part it went right onto pvc, it had eventually melted a huge hole in the PVC causing water and CO leak

    Yikes!

Those people shouldn't be touching a gas furnace!

  • Newer Goodman's actually are pretty good. I have a 2008 Goodman and it works Fine, never had any problems with it since we've been here for about 6 months.

  • In my mind its the installation and how hacked it is..A builders grade system will always suck.. Period.. There built cheap and not ment to be anything long lasting.. I just had a Goodman installed in my buddys town home in san diego. It was a good install, done very well by a well trained, liscenced contractor who pulled permits.. Also i feel Heat Pumps in general SUCK.. There trouble prone, complex units with alot of parts. A straight cool unit with a gas or electric furnace is better

  • I Agee 100% we had a goodman that was form 2000 and it died because

  • I agree 100%,the only thing worse than a goodman heat pump is a goodman furnace. They suck so bad they changed their name from junkatrol too goodman

  • those goodmans are bad but some work good the ones from 2007 and up are pretty good mine had to be repaired only once but turns out a cat had climbed the duct and

turned off the breaker for the air handler

  • wow no offense but ive got a goodman thats been running trouble free but sometimes it blows cold like my friends concord and mine needs some tlc

but it freezes the house in summer and burnd it to a crisp in the winter but my grandmas frigidaire is better than mine
