I know that happens a lot and that's a shame. But as long as the good dead gets done then good. Also this is volunteering time and skills, not just a donation of money and then saying "i helped". Also promoting the volunteer process is a major way to promote charity and volunteerism. So what if people do it because it makes them 'cool', good.
Jeremy, I missed the first help-portrait due to a bad back, but I was so inspired, several friends and I started a small group. We've photographed hundreds of families in NY City, in the Bronx, Harlem, and Brooklyn throughout the past year.
We found housing projects and centers that assist people in need and arranged for photo sessions and provided printed portraits. We have awesome volunteers, some pro's, amateurs like me, and all of us love the spirit of giving back.
Why is it that people these days can't simply do nice things and leave it at that. Why is it that we have to make annoucements to let the world know how nice we are. If we do something nice and no one knows about it then why bother, right? This is what this is... simply calling attention to yourself so people can tell you what a great person you are. You're so nice.
I attended as a bit of a skeptic and came away a supporter. Not a photographer myself, I never would have guessed that in an age of Instamatic cameras and throw away digital cameras that so many (400-500 ) people would stand in line in 40 degree winds to have a stranger take their picture and get it printed out to take home.
Some families and groups of neighbors said that they had never had a group picture of their own. It was a simple but moving experience. Thank all of you!
What a lovely and great idea!!!
