The EIS teachers union held a mass demonstration in Glasgow on 6th March 2010. Funding for education is under serious threat. Education budgets are being slashed and threatening the future of a whole generation. Many schools have been closed across the country, particularly in Glasgow where New Labour councillors voted to close 22 and a further 38 are under threat, and that's just in the Glasgow area. The teachers union has not been provoked into action for a long time but the recent cuts are so severe that it will ruin society if the government continues its plans. As Helen Connor, the president of the EIS said, children are the future of our country. If a whole generation of children are damaged the country will be damaged. Unemployment is high enough already and attacking children's schooling will be detrimental to their job prospects and the running of society in general. It is not the fault of children that there is a recession. "Why must our children pay?" is the slogan for a new campaign launched by the EIS to defend education from the cuts. The 6th of March demonstration and rally officially launched the campaign. The demonstrators assembled in Kelvingrove Park, marched down Kelvin Way, into Argyle St, past Finnieston into the town centre then turned towards the SECC and ended up in the Armadillo building for a mass rally. There will be many more events to come as teachers, lecturers, parents and kids unite to fight the proposed cuts. They have the support of progressive organisations, parties, trade unions and individuals, but the big political parties were not well represented at the demonstration as they were no doubt too afraid to show their faces after voting to slash services including schools. Some parents from the Glasgow Save Our Schools Campaign were on the march as they have already experienced first hand the damage that has been done to their kids' education with the closing of their local primary schools. Protestors turned out from all over Scotland for the march. Many different EIS branch banners could be seen including ones from the Scottish islands.
Updates: the EIS were quite a big contingent on the STUC demo in Edinburgh on Oct 23rd and brought their issue to the Scottish parliament. On 19th February 2011 the EIS held a protest in Paisley, Renfrewshire and they also have plans for another big demonstration. They participated in the big London anti-cuts demo recently on 26 March 2011. More recently in June 2011 the teachers union NUT in England have voted to strike.
Teachers will be joining masses of other strikers on November 30th for the N30 day of action. Even more workers will be on strike than on 30/06/11 and the demonstrations are expected to be massive.
