Has anybody got any tips on giving the best maintenance to these engines, ours it just edging 200,000 Kms and still doesn't miss a beat but it's getting on in life and I would like to know if there are any problem areas that need special attention. It gets a full servise every 5 to 6 thousand ks (oil, filters and other bits an pieces) The 6ve1 engine is the most reliable jackaroo engine they made (in my own opinion) cause our 88 jackaroo with the 4ze1 engine blows head gaskets every 60 to 70 t

I have one of these trucks too. A 99 rodeo..has that ticking noise too. What a worthless money pit of a truck..why doesn't isuzu recall these engines?

Bad rod bearing almost always the #1, the vehicle probably ran low on oil.
2000 and up 3.2 & 3.5L have the same problems.
This may sound odd BUT the pistons get too hot and the wrist-pin(s) begin to seize, this causes the piston to bind side-ways and the engine to burn oil, better clearances or full floating pin would have fixed this.
Behind the Throttle Body plates is the EGR outlet, it always carbons-up, keep this open and you'll reduce peak piston temp. but the real problem is the design.

@arnoni11 I have the engine torn apart right now and am in the process of replacing the crankshaft, #1 connecting rod, all rod bearings, all main bearings, thrust bearing, oil pump, gaskets and piston rings. Also to be done is hone the cylinders, remove the edge created by the pistons, clean ALL oil passages to remove the metal from the spun bearing and re-time the engine. I recommend trashing the car because even the new crank is only going to last 60K to 80K miles.

It is a rod bearing. Mine sounded exactly like that. Don't pull the plug caps while the motors running.

@Topsiscute Found out it was a spun rod bearing. I got the new bearing in the mail today and engine is prepped for install. A little minor spalling in the rod and cap as well as the crank journal. I don't have the time to turn the crank. Unfortunately it's gonna be a poor fix that will work for a while unless I'm lucky and it hold out a little longer.

Sounds like you may have a loose connection, your valves may need an ajustment on their timing. Get that checked out. Sorry I wish I could help more

@killer52lolh Thanks. I'm in the process of taking the valve covers off now to check everything under there (cam, valves, lifters...). I'll post the results when and if I find anything there.
