"A Summer In Urbana"
Music by Jason Robert Brown

~~~
I could be at home on summer break.
I could be relaxing by the lake.
But instead I have to spend a summer in Urbana
With a two-day, six hour test coming up in September.
I could go to Egypt, see the Nile.
I could wander Paris for a while.
But it wouldn't be as nice as a summer in Urbana
Where I'm sharing a hall with the rowdy first years...
(Okay guys, yes, I bring you cookies, but can we please get some work done?)
I could take some time to wander through the quad,
But then I'd notice something odd:
Where have the Americans gone?
I could be at Jupiter's on a date,
Prob'bly get home pretty late.
Still, I'm certain I'd prefer to be stuck here so frustrated
Trying to figure out what's approximated...
I could shove an ice pick in my eye.
I could eat some fish from last July,
But it wouldn't be as horrid as a summer in Urbana
Without sailing, my family, miscellaneous thrills, or hills.
Statistical Mechanics is what torments me,
And E and M I heard can be really tricky.
And someone told me the Quantum ones are simple, but I found out that's a lie.
Special Relativity should be relatively easy,
But this problem is an awful mess and it's making me feel queasy.
So I close the book and take a breath and lay my pencil down.
It hurts me, it haunts me, but it ain't gonna get me!
I've worked this one all night.
Why can't I see the light? Wait!
Look at this! Look at me!
Son of a bitch! I guess I'm doing something right!
I finally got something right!
No, this isn't research but it's on the way.
I'm getting better at this every day.
Still, I'll get on my knees and pray that these equations I'll remember.
I don't want to repeat this next September!
I could chew on tin foil for a spell.
I could get a root canal in hell.
But it wouldn't be as swell
As this summer is gonna be.
'Cause it's just too gosh darn exciting,
The solutions that I'll be writing.
So I've gotta work, mustn't shirk, and in time we'll see:
After one test, five years, then I'll be
One Miss Katie Crimmins, P. H. D.
