The Black Keys recorded 2 albums on this make and model.... sounded pretty good to me...I wonder if they had any further editing on different equipment before the albums made it to the stores...
I realize I sound like one of those typical "haters" so I apologise. The thing is fun to use and it does bring back memories of simpler times. I saw a post of the 688 which replaced the 388 (with a cassette tape) and I remember wanting even that one for years. Now I got a Pro Tools HD3 rig and a C24 console making world wide releases of my music. But these posts make me miss the old days and even I would dig to have a 388 or 688 now for nostalgia. So just for fun, these things rock.
People, I have fond memories of this machine. But dont be confused about its quality just because its analog. It was cool for the time, but honestly its not so great. The preamps are LOOOONG before anything acceptable was affordable. It was $2,000 new and OOOH how I wanted one. But that was before knowing what makes for good audio. Fun for demos, but this was about 6 years before Mackie brought us "usable" mic preamps and eq anywhere near that cost let alone an 8 track. Nothing to drool over.
