  • Mad Man Muntz helped launch the car steroe business after he got the idea from Sammy Davis jr who went to him to have him make a cart machine with music as he saw used in radio stations for ads. It was better than having a record player in the car subject to bumpy roads

  • @Patequi thank you for your comet the car stereo was born when my dad first saw mine i had built in the fifty's using a early inverter and a real to real tape deck for my car Then in 1959 dad found a company that made continuous loop tape.in monaural format .

  • @Patequi the first car stereo was born in my car in 1956 I use a real to real deck and 110 inverter.Dad found a company called mood master that used a monaural format for back ground music in 1959 At that time stereo anything was very limited and stereo records were just coming out so dad and i modified at that time a Conley continuous playback deck and put 2 record and playback heads and staggered them ,rerecord Ampex real to real stereo music .And that was the birth of Car Stereo

  • cont'd, they too wanted one, this is when Mad Man Muntz saw the potential and began manufacturing 4 track players for cars. My first car bought in 1966, had a 4-track player, At So Cal swap meets, they used to sell bootleg concerts on 4-trks of the leading rock or soul bands of the day. A few years later the 8 trk came out and eventually the cassete player

Your background story is fascinating, however it doesn't account for mass production of car systems. Sammy Davis was known to be a music lover & always had a portable record player in his limo. When he was interviewed at a radio station he noticed that a cart machine-4 track cartridge loop player was used to air the ads. when he discovered the nmanufacturer of the device he went to them to purchase one and gave them records to record for the carts. When Sammy's pal saw this....

  • the Simpsons character Nelson Muntz is named after "Mad Man Muntz"

  • @jetjime That's too bad.
