Sandy may have been a britt.......but she had the voice of an Angel......Oh yes
-
@AnAnonymusCat I too sang 'love' for ages until I stopped and thought about it :P
-
@AnAnonymusCat I think the correct version is actually "loathe". It would make sense anyway, as the previous line is "I would, if welcome I were", suggesting that the singer isn't welcome. I love this song too though, what a great song to have sung to you as a lullaby! @catndryer "loathe" means "hate".

Its not just beautiful, her voice is PERFECT!

My old amp has died so listening via YouTube. First saw them at Essex Uni. in 1969 - Sandy was awesome (rip). Some of the nicest music ever.
ps the cover for 'what we did ..' was drawn on a blackboard that day at Essex - I should have nicked it for posterity.

It really is such a beautiful record and Sandy's vocal still sends happy shivers down my spine!

"for they loathe me, every one"......I don't understand this part of the lyric

Am not a native English speaker.
Can anyone say what 'swear a year' might mean here? Is it an expression?

It would be like saying "I promise to stay with you for one year." It's an older saying that not many English people would use anymore.

Perfect stuff - we think it is one of the loveliest of songs
Kate Rusbys hommage is pretty good too - 'John Barbery'
how old is the melody - is a Fairport original tune or Trad anon ?
