This is the first of 'Thirteen Tolkien Songs for Children's Voices', in an orchestral arrangement.
Tolkien's poem begins: 'Gil-galad was an Elven-King/Of him the harpers sadly sing:/The last whose realm was fair and free/Between the Mountains and the Sea.' The full text can be found on pp. 197-8 of 'The Fellowship of the Ring' (Vol. I of 'The Lord of the Rings').

The images are of the statue of King Alfred in the square at Wantage, and the sea off the coast of Cornwall.

A vocal score of this song (voice part with piano accompaniment) can be printed out for free from St. Maur Music's webpage at:

The complete set of 'Thirteen Tolkien Songs for Children's Voices' is distributed by the online music retailers tutti, at:

  • @Farisbuk It wasn't in the movie that Sam sung it. It was in the book.

  • @DekugaLyon Yes, I agree, and Bilbo translated it, so it would not be a song of hobbit-make/hobbitish tune. Furthermore, Sam also stated something to the extent, "I didn't learn the rest because it was about Mordor and it scared me..." so it is probably safe to assume it would have been darker.

  • @MorningStarofGondor Sure, it was SUNG by sam...in the book. But that doesn't make it clear what race wrote it, and no matter what, you don't cheerfully sing about, "Into darkness fell his star/ in Mordor where the shadows are"

  • In which Lord of the Rings movie and in which minute of movie did Sam sung The Fall of Gil-Galad?

  • Casio style

  • @ Drerark, might I remind you this song was sung by Samwise Gamgee. The tune fits in that sense, that is it's a very Hobbitish tune.

  • @Drerark :

    It sounds like rythm of

    Gil-Galad was an elven King...

Songs are supposed to sound like the words, not like the incidents.

  • Nice

  • Doesn't sound like anything's falling at all, let alone a hero. At best perhaps that wanderers walking stick, and he picks it up afterwards. The End. But then, it's a children's song.
