@lillymountain my father sang this to me when I was a little girl, but he was a second generation german immigrant to america so german was not his first language nor his best. The song has been passed down through my family for many generations and I can see how some of the words and part of the tune was lost in translation from the original. this version, however wrong I'm sure it is, has a great deal of sentimental value to me, so please forgive the inaccuracies.
