New Brunswick, New Jersey home of Rutgers University, the Johnson & Johnson world headquarters, America's largest medical college (UMDNJ), and two major affiliated research hospitals, may sound like a city where the health-care rains from the sky, but alas, nothing of the sort ever happens. Instead, most of the city's permanent residents live under the poverty line and cannot begin to relate to the sign, painted on the side of the bridge, over George Street, that reads "Welcome to the Health-Care City." I thought this disparity should be included in my video about the city.

However, I want to make clear that I was not out to relish in irony. Instead, I was set on making a film that related my experience of living in a certain space and time, because ultimately what I am interested in is everyday life and community. Yes! What constantly amazed me about New Brunswick was how vibrantly normal activities played on and around the mega-corporation's influence and the steady increment of gentrification. In making this film, I wanted to illustrate the depth of seemingly "marginal" moments, people, and places, and in the end, I surprised even myself with film's ability to do just that.

  • Well Done, Very Creative, it's New Brunswick in a nutshell!!

  • I am glad you enjoy it stranger, it was made with love, nothing more, nothing less.

  • this vid makes E.B. look so boring and dull makes me wanna never visit

  • This is not e.b, this is n.b, and it is cool with me whether you decide to visit it or not- a touristic invitation is not what I was going for.

  • mason gross ?

  • Sorry for the delay. I graduated from Rutgers College with a degree in English and a minor in Religion last May. These days I am enrolled in my own personal Mason Gross School for the Arts, it is in my apartment in West Philadelphia. How are you?

  • Amazing. You've captured the feel of the urban living environment. As humans, we gather to make life easier, but sometimes in the process, we inadvertently harm ourselves. A great clip that shows the beauty and intelligence of human gathering, coupled with the consequences and hazards of gathering. I teach Urban Environmental Policy, and I plan to show it to my students every year, from now on, as long as it's posted on YouTube. I hope that's as long as I'm teaching!
