Video (longer excerpt). At the 2008 APHA Conference at Columbia Univ., Rich Hopkins shows a movie of his Monotype caster producing metal borders for letterpress printing. Rich has an amazing collection of matrices (mats, or molds) in his basement (some from American Type Founders, others from Farmer of New York [via Kelsey]), as well as an impressive collection of casters. He helped found the American Typecasting Fellowship and edits its newsletter. My favorite line comes at the end, while explaining how to set up the machine and cast metal borders, once the caster is set up, "It's as easy as falling off a wall."
