Even though it is ok to hold the head in a particular position, I'm not too crazy about the "applying more pressure" on the client's head.

Gos why women, men's hairdressing should be by men, and you do not hold the top of the clients head when you cut hair, and good barbers do not need an over comb on their clippers, after 50 odd years in the trade this I do know....

why don't you just show them a picture of a style you like. That is all the explaination you'd ned unless you wanted to tweak it a bit and add some changes.

I know, It makes me nervous when the hairstlyist askes me how I want my hair cut. Because I know i'm going to mess up somewhere in my explination and my haircut will be a peice of crap. I wish they would just ask- "how long do you want it". The rest I'm sure they could figure out.

We never expected this kind of discussion on hair cuts! It's great really as long as everyone remembers this is just meant to help out the person just trying to trim hair at home, not going for the most en vogue style.

Yes, and if the haircut turns out horribly or isn't stylish at all, they can always blame you. i think that a good haircut should be in 'style' but cut to suit you.
A professional shouldn't have a problem with that, especially with a relatively fuss-free short men's cut...
