My form three pupil, who has been learning English since kindergarten, cannot read aloud properly; yet, this skill, along with his general spoken pronunciation, have been improving in the thirteen weeks since we began a phonics-approach to reading (like most Hong Kong people, he has learned to read English using the disastrous whole-language approach). Right now, thankfully, regular decodable words do not present too much of a challenge to him; it is the long-O challenge words, however, which will take awhile for him to master.
