You are right in your thinking on this. This thinking the the Messiah is anything different the YHWH is false, the Judgment has been suspended because he is Great in Mercy, He has always been the same. Grace did not start in the NT.

Because they had rejected Him. In Genesis when God is talking to Abraham God says the Amorites have not yet sinned enough but in the time of the Israelites they had-they were sacrficing their children. God had to destroy them
