This was the Rhythm Devils most excellent performance at Vegoose in 2006. What a great band. Mickey, Billy, Mike Gordon and the incredible Mr. Steve Kimmock. WOW, thats all I have to say. Enjoy!!!
@Gossage54 It's my opinion that Mickey plays more rhythm (no pun intended) and Bill is the beat man. Bill also works the symbols more which gives their "duo" a balanced sound.
I totally agree the pre 71 dual drumming is by far the best. Their polyrhythmic stuff fantastic when listened to with headphones to hear both playing off eachother. The post 76 stuff can not as dynamic. Especially as the years went on it became the "Mickey Hart Show" and I think Billy kind of just layed back and kept a backbeat while Mick pounded away at the toms. In the early days they were a real team and Mickey was NOT just the "percussionist" they were a drumming duo. Like Butch and Jamoe.
@Gossage54 - Hey, with all due respect, I totally disagree with you about Mickey . My 1st show was closing of the fillmore west and I saw the dead every year thru 95 cept 78 when I saw JGB and something further every year since 95 - -- anyway -I have often felt the dead drummers before 71 were fantastic but after 76 somewhat plodding at times. Mickey Standing and playing his ass off isbig improvement . I must say I like this band better than teh current one with Phil and Bobby strangely enuf
I guess what richiemabie says is true....me also being a drummer, I feel exactly the same as you...every show I go into on this tour, I'm so pumped for the show, then when I walk inside and see Bill's Kit and Mickey's toy's i get a little bummed...I still have fun, but man what I would give to have Mickey playing a kit again!
i suppose no one cares about things like that, unless you are a drummer youself, i have a buddy like that, i was at this show and thought it was great
I dunno to me Steve is kinda like listening to Buddy Cage with NRPS and hearing Garcia play steel on the solo Garcia and 1st NRPS. Its good but not high enough.
This version is good but check out the Paul Green school of rock version of Cumberland - its about as good except for the one vocal - way off key.
I'm a drummer and I've been a Dead fan (used to be obsessive) since 1987. That said, it annoys me that Mickey these days doesn't even really play the drums anymore! He wears the gloves, the headphones all the toys. But he just seems to playfully pound away at whatever drum pad he feels with these mallets! He's a great drummer and him and Kreutzmann are legendary, get behind a drum kit! It kills me!
