The typical way for Hollywood to make Maurice Sendak's book WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE into a movie would be to turn it into SHREK. It would be noisy and colorful, the wild things would fart a lot, there'd be some stupid quest to save the island or some princess, one wild thing would be voiced by Chris Rock or Queen Latifah, and the movie would end with Max, the little boy, learning some saccharine lesson about friendship and being yourself. And it would UTTERLY SUCK. Yet amazingly, director Spike Jonze was allowed to adapt the story HIS way, staying true to the book's tone of danger and rowdiness, while imbuing it with an unexpected and insanely clever emotional resonance that's made WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE my favorite movie of the year so far, and maybe the best movie about childhood I've ever seen.

  • This is an excellent review. I saw the movie last night and whole-heartedly agree with your views. I loved the movie too and thought it elicited emotions and touched on issues I remember feeling as a kid. Yet, even in my adult life, I know the wild things are still alive inside me, I just know how to hide and handle them a little better. Good luck on the radio tomorrow.

  • @rylraven13 I think it's not a matter or feeling sorry or sympathetic about the kid. The movie is more about how the kid deals with his own emotions, being them reasonable or not.

  • I am apparently one of few who hates this movie. For one main reason: the kid was an obnoxious brat who deserves to get smacked around a bit. I felt, watching this, that I was meant to feel sorry for this kid and in not feeling that way it starts feeling like the movie is telling me I am wrong. So, ultimately, I felt like I was in a state of perpetual argument with the movie. My husband had me watch it so he could discuss it with me, turns out we felt the same way. At least I am not alone.

  • when i watched an other bit of the film its at the end i started crying at the end

  • @rockeryears nice way to try to spin it

  • @sakecity7 Isn't that the whole idea of being a kid? Sometimes you just don't get the answers like you're supposed to, and this movie portrayed it perfectly.

  • Probably the most underrated film there ever was. Enough said.

  • Stupid faggot movie

  • it was definately better than avatar in my opinion.

  • clear ,concise and perfect review. Hit the nail right on the head why the film resonated with so many.

  • Such a genius storyline
