This victory of 6-0 is the largest margin ever inflicted by a Brazilian club on an Argentinean one in the history of the Libertadores.

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil - Striker Dodo scored a pair of goals and set up two more Wednesday to lead Fluminense to a 6-0 rout of Argentina's Arsenal and into first place in Group 8 of the Copa Libertadores.

The victory gave Fluminense 4 points in Group 8, tied with Ecuador's Liga de Quito, but the Brazilians hold first place on goal average. Arsenal is third with 3 points, while Paraguay's Libertad has 0.

It was a triumphant return to Maracana stadium for Fluminense, which hadn't played a Libertadores game in the temple of Brazilian soccer since 1985, a year after its only Brazilian national title.

Before a raucous crowd dressed in Flu's red, green and white jerseys, the "tricolors" quickly dispatched Arsenal.

At 14 minutes, Thiago Neves sent a free kick from the right side into the far corner of the net for a 1-0 lead.

Junior Cesar centered from the left baseline 10 minutes later, and Dodo leaped in the penalty area to fire a shot into the right corner to the second goal of the match.

In the final minute of the half, Dodo dribbled through the Arsenal defense and passed to Gabriel streaking in from the right side. The wing back chipped the ball over Arsenal goalkeeper Mario Cuenca to send his team to the break with a 3-0 lead.

Dodo got his second goal in the 51st minute in a spectacular play. Midfielder Thiago Neves centered from the right side and Dodo swiveled to fire a right-footed volley into the upper corner, as an ovation erupted from Fluminense fans.

Striker Washington got on the board after 71 minutes, taking a through pass from Dodo and tapping the ball past Cuenca, and substitute midfielder Cicero sealed the win 5 minutes from full time when he curved a free kick around the wall.

Fluminense provided an exhibition of superb football and individual quality from all of their players as they destroyed Arsenal de Sarandi in the live Setanta match.

The Group Eight fixture was worthy of the magnificent Maracana Stadium as the Brazilians toyed with their Argentinian opponents.

Thiago Neves (13), Dodo (24, 50), Gabriel (45), Washington (71) and Cicero (86) all got on the scoresheet and it could have been even worse for Arsenal.

Thiago Neves and Dodo were particularly outstanding but it was fantasy football from the hosts, who at least never resorted to foul means to try and stop their superior opponents.

In Montevideo, Estudiantes overcame Danubio 2-1 in a hard-fought encounter.

Roberto Sensini's team played for more than an hour with 10 men after Agustin Alayes was sent off after only 25 minutes.

With both sides entering the game with only a point to their name, it was always going to be a tight clash but Estudiantes now have three games left to play in Argentina.

Irala opened the scoring for Danubio after only eight minutes with a header from a corner but Juan Sebastian Veron equalised from the penalty spot on the hour mark.

Veron was outstanding, particularly in the second half, as his probing passes helped unlock the Danubio defence. Enzo Perez grabbed the all-important winner with only three minutes left.

Sao Paulo defeated Audax Italiano 2-1 in the Morumbi Stadium. Carlos Villanueva opened the scoring after 63 minutes for Audax but two goals from Adriano turned things around and started a party in the stadium and the streets of Sao Paulo.

  • @adriane40 80 years this club has existed, and they never won anything. Now they win 4 international cups and you want to attribute that to altitude? Besides, the club is based in Quito. And how come Bolivian teams never won anything? Dork-o.

  • @Nerzul4o PFFT, then give back your, OOPS I meant OUR south american talents. Most south american teams have 20-24 year olds playing. We export players, you buy them.

  • This League is pure joke. If any south american team play in champion's league , i bet that they will go max once per decade to 1/8 finals

  • liga de quito sucks. they only win games because of the fucking altitude, but when they play in a normal altitude thay loose and they always will loose when playing fair, to win they need to play at the top of their fucking fucked up country. thier best player is their location. bunch of bitches
