Directly from the press release:
(Monday, 29th March 2010) eircom today launched Next Generation Broadband (NGB) which will improve the broadband experience for up to 1 million consumer and business customers in Ireland this year.
eircoms entry level product for broadband will move from 1Mb to up to 8Mb, for all customers in NGB exchange areas.
Customers on eircoms NGB will benefit from no congestion. It will provide users with a better, more consistent free flow broadband experience especially during peak times. This will improve customer experience for high bandwidth activities such as downloading films, gaming and streaming video content. For business customers, it will facilitate new trends such as cloud computing applications.
Existing broadband customers on 1Mb, 3Mb and 7Mb will be upgraded for free, as the programme is rolled out. Initially available in Dublin, Next Generation Broadband rollout will be expanded to all major urban areas including Cork, Limerick, Galway and Waterford by the end of the year. Customers can find out more on http://www.eircom.net/ngb.
Speaking at the launch, Paul Donovan CEO eircom Group said Improved broadband performance is critical for Ireland to realise its objectives as a smart economy. Next Generation Broadband demonstrates a commitment by eircom to upgrade the quality of broadband services offered to customers. Customers will have a high performance experience, receiving their own dedicated online lane on the countrys new digital motorway.
This capability is underpinned by eircoms Next Generation Network, a digital motorway that provides high capacity bandwidth across the country providing real benefits for consumers and businesses and other telecommunications operators. eircom is open for business and Next Generation Broadband underlines the companys alignment with the national economic agenda.
eircom has invested €1bn over a three year period in its infrastructure, including the construction of the Next Generation Network. This very high capacity, all IP network is a key foundation for Irelands future economic growth. It provides greater downloading capacity in anticipation of the continued growth in high bandwidth consumption from sites such as YouTube, RTE Player and other providers of online content. A recent Cisco study suggests that by 2013, 91% of consumer internet traffic will be video content.*
