The first train to haul a load on rails in the world ran a nine and a half mile journey from Merthyr Tydfil to Abercynon in South Wales in 1804. The whole of this historic route is now a scenic rural walk called the Trevithick Trail.
Just outside of Merthyr Tydfil is the Trevithick Tunnel which now features a series of nineteen stone sculptures as part of a pleasant twenty minute circular walk with gentle gradients. The walk is regularly used by people for exercise and walking.
