Dave McLean, owner and brewmaster of San Francisco's Magnolia Pub and Brewery, gives a craftsman's take on the proper way to enjoy a beer. "We usually mindlessly open our beers and pour them, and don't think too much about it," he says.

-----

Most of the time when we order up some beers, we're just happy to put that life-giving elixir into our bellies, especially after a rough work week. But it isn't often that we actually consider how the delicious beer is created.

Sure, we know that you need hops, whatever those are, and water, and some other stuff, and then you put it in a pot and ... then ... beer happens? Not quite.

Dave McLean details the science of brewing, from the perspective of a craft brewer. - Down to a Science

Dave McLean has a degree in brewing science from UC Davis and is the owner and brewmaster at San Francisco's Magnolia Pub and Brewery.

  • I remember my first beer.

  • 9 people that watched this are helpless victims of bmc's marketing.

  • @Georg5555 no. you can ferment a beer in a few days if it's light enough. Some beers can take up to 8 months or more to properly ferment but it's not common, especially in optimal conditions. Basically, the more malt you have the more sugur there is. the more sugar there is the longer it takes to ferment.

  • is beer the longest alcoholic drink that takes time to make ?

  • A lot of bull shit for a glass of beer.

  • I believe you missed the most important step. First you start with a freshly rinsed glass. The glass has to be WET on the inside. Second the head should be the shape of a mushroom, slightly elevated over the top edge of the glass.

  • @huntingwolf20 IPA's are higher alcohol than any light beer, nearly any pilsner and typically any lager. IPA ABV's are characteristically from 5-8% ABV. DIPA's (double IPA's) can be a lot higher in ABV hitting 10% or even higher sometimes. I wouldn't know much about the beers you mentioned, I've heard about the Steel Reserve though, I hear it's dirt cheap and it tastes of hobo booty. Probably what they brew it in honestly. Personally, I only drink craft beer. :D

  • @fatsachs IPA's aren't really any stronger alcohol than any other beer, right? I drink them all the time, but can drink just a few of those damn Steel Reserves, or 2 CRazy Horse 40's and I'm pretty well lit. Not sure about double's though, guess that is some potent shit.

  • @eddysvideos33 What kind of beer do you drink? I'm very curious because I'm pretty sure you are the Milwaukees best type judging from your statement here. I'd love to see you flat on your face after pounding a couple DIPA's. I'd bottle fuck your stupid ass!

  • Never trust a skinny beer drinker, I believe this fella.
