@UkPR0 You have got to nail your bait to the sea bed, short of and up-tide of the wrerck to have any realistic chance of catching big Congers. Personally I use very thin diameter uncoated (R) Dyneema braid line to minimise water resistamce and keep leads to the minimum.  However if you watch another of my videos on YouTube when we caught some veruy big Congers, up to 100 lbs, "Samuel Irvin 3" - Congers - 030609 you will see that we needed 4 lbs of lead even with thin braid to hold bottom

Hi,

We have to use 2 lbs of lead, sometimes more and sometimes less to hold bottom in 240 to 260 feet of water tyo hold bottom in the strong tidal flow. You will not catch Congers in mid-water. I have also fished for big Eels, using a Downrigger with no weight on rod line but up to 10 lbs on downrigger wire. Rod line is clipped to downrigger weight and pulls free when fish takes bait. That's all rather specialised for most fishing days.

Hi there i would like to know if you could give me some advice on what rigs and baits to use to catch a normal european eel in a dockland ive tried what they say in books but it never worked :-( ps. there are eel in those docks i've been told by a friend of mine

Hello RapperDboy,

Ordinary Silver Eels (Anguilla anguilla) are a very different specie from the Conger (Conger conger) and anything you may read or see about catching Conger Eels is a vastly different technique than catching Silver Eels, which also live in the fresh water as well as salt and brackish waters.

Silver Eels have been decimated by a viral disease which prevents young Elvers from reaching our shores from the Sargasso Sea, where the breeding occurs.

Use Worm or fish baits legered.

I love Conger Eels, always thought of them as a great challenge, they have a habbit or wrapping themselves around immoveable object if you don't reel em into midwater quick enough, and also they get up to 350 :-O, ps they can take your fingers off when they get big....I love Congers...yeahhhhhhhh
