A long note followed by a short note is not the same thing as swung. Those markings have to do with the length of the note within the notated rhythm. A written out swing lick would have to have have an altered rhythm, not articulation. Obviously this is up for debate and we can't ask Bernstein what he wanted, but I truly believe if he had wanted it swung he would marked "swing sixteenths" or written a triplet rhythm. At no point does he indicate anything of this nature, but interpret away! :-)

@swiftybone the composer does want it some of it swung. on the sixteenth notes, he has a tenuto on one sixteenth note, and a stacatto on the next, and the pattern continues throughout.

Where's the foot tap??

Watch tempo, it fluctuates throughout and it should be steady. In my opinion the sixteenths SHOULD NOT BE SWUNG! So what if Joe Alessi does it, it's not marked, if Bernstein wanted it swung, he would have indicated.

I would suggest trying to key into the style more, I would say this sounds more like a Brahms-esque vocal style (with some slide vibrato and other inflection). It's basically jazz...
