James Kalm is cycling down for the summer, but before being immersed in the art world doldrums, he ventures into Chelsea for one more Thursday night gallery crawl. "Reflexive Self" at Mike Weiss Gallery features a collection of images of the macabre. Large drawings by Dead Dads Corporation have the shocking presence of crime scene photos. Kim Dorland and Stefanie Gutheil peruse chunky colorful expressionism, while Marc Seguin leavens his austere canvases with conceptual content and blobs of oil paint and elicits a spontaneous diatribe from Daniel Larkin on his use of Hitler as subject. . Okay Mountain's "Benefit Plate" at Freight+Volume, is the latest offering by this Austin Texas based collective/gallery. These ten artists have received much attention for their whimsical humor combined with critical representations of American culture. Includes interviews with Carlos Rosales-Silva, Corkey Sink and Josh Rios.

  • @thing4asians I think that's a big category.

  • Dear James. Thank you for showing canadian artists Kim Dorland and Marc Seguin. Good to see some artists on the periphery get some attn. Canadian art is a well kept secret!

  • @jameskalm lazy, would you like to see one first befor you call it lazy, i like that word tho, lazy its fun to say, ever float in a lazy river, i had a lazyboy once. lazy, so is your work about art, like a history of art in newyork, how is that not lazy, its done for you allready your just listing words and places on a canvas, i like the look of them, kinda random the way the shapes and colors all fill the space, do you plot out everything befor you paint, or does it just grow

  • punk slacker meets wilderness....meets tailgating culture....exploring niches between the big categories seems like a good possibility at this place in time.

  • hitler art? didn't kippenberger/albert oehlen do that about 25 years ago? I hope that dorland's work doesn't become predictable but the marketplace wants a trademark style...OK Ok mountain! more mash-ups all the time...thank you james kalm
