That's exactly what the quick discussion (3:25) was before beginning the anthems. Fact is, many events do it backwards, which is improper except on the property of a foreign country's embassy. Another fact is that, interestingly enough, applauding afterwords (like they do at sports events) is also improper.

As a matter of protocol the American anthem should have been sung first as they are in American soil.
