Actully first you must compete normal story mode on 100% then you get extra mode which is where your health is only 3bars but the rest of the game is the same and if you get 100% in extra story mode then you can play as metaknight :)

I don't think he did it on purpose, i think he tried to time it right with the spin attack and get them both but was too late.
