Foxton Locks Inclined Plane, Site Of Planned Renovation

The boat lift consisted of two giant tanks that ran on rails in the channels visible here, one descending and the other ascending. Boats would enter a tank, one or two at a time, and go from one arm of the canal to the other, much more quickly than was possible using the locks. Retaining walls have been removed. The restoration will eventually involve reproducing a working lift.
