Wade In The Water, Ago Lona- Yoruba/Lukumi
This performance took place at an Ase(Ah-shay ) of Peace Fellowship- (a cultural gathering of artists who set the intention of peace with their performances in Brooklyn, NY.)
The songs Wade in the Water and Ago Lona serve as a bridge joining the music of the African American Christian Church and Orisa/Ifa together and are performed live to create a synchronicity of healing, redemption and beauty.
Amma's dance is the embodiment of the Orisa Yemoja/Yemaya bringing an understanding of the qualities/power of the Divine Mother in this spiritual tradition. Water is present in every sacred ceremony and ritual by all religions and spiritual traditions. African people thru out the diaspora have always used it as divine conduit to open the way to support a change in consciousness or life situation. This song was the response to the performance of Strange Fruit by Tulani Kinard on another video.
The voice of love from the mother principle is always louder than the one of hatred and despair...Our traditions and ritual in the Diaspora secure and affirm this experience from our ancestral memory and history.
Dancing Yemoja/Yemaya- Amma McKen, is an NEA award winning artist and UPON-(sacred vocalist in the Orisa/IFA tradition) a Priestess of Yemoja and the artistic director of the OmiYesa cultural performance group based in NY.
