I don't actually like the sound of that guitar but what the hell
As what was comment below, he's right.
People nowdays don't understand what music is all about.
It isn't about the skill but it is about the music.
Pure stuff man, keep it going

Yes, BUT....
Even for very simple pieces of music ( some Bach for instance ) having better technique will help you get the emotion accross more effectively.
-
to some extent your are both right. David gilmours guitar solos are known to be very emotional. They are. But they are not hard to play, and you dont need good technique to play a lot of them. But to make it sound really good, you need to feel for it.
If you wanna play complex bach, in order to get emotions across, you need better technique than elsewhere. How good you technique needs to be in order for ur emotions to come across all depends on the piece your're playing.

search: Armand - ben ik te min. This guy is a total weed smoking hippy but he shows my point. This guy talks about the prejudged people who mock him because he doesn't have a big car and doesn't has alot of wealth. He express his pure self and all the people of his "kind" in the way he plays. He cannot play or sing well but it is just enough to lay out the expression and the emotion that is needed for this song. Sure you need technique to play bach but bach is God himself.

I am not saying that the worlds greatest technique is needed to portray emotions through music, I just don't believe faults in the playing help you to get across the emotion.
Good technique is even more essential in the complex music of Bach ( ie fugue's - counterpoint.....) Every note is important and plays an important role both harmonically, and in the part writing.... If you stuff it up, then it ruins an entire section of the piece.
Thus Enhancing???? the emotion of the piece?

I have played the piano for 11 years, and the viola for 8. I am also studying for a BA in music, focussed mainly on performance. And I tell you, without a good technique, no matter how emotional you are about the piece of music, you are not going to get the emotion across. You may get it across with facial expressions and acting. But the music will not speak for itself.

I play the drums for 9 years now and I study Composition and Music production (bachelor). The best of a piece is not always the most perfect. You must now that as a musician. You said you NEED technique to express the soul and I said that it was simply not true. Even in this case. This song's beauty comes not entirely from the perfection of the play. I can assure you, if you play this fucked up in a emotional, expressive way and call it drunktap it can still be a fucking awesome piece of music.

1) Why the hell did you bring chords into this? I am not saying that good music cannot be simple. eg pachabels canon.
2) I do agree that having outstanding technique doesn't necceserily make you a good musician, or an emotional performer.
3) The way I have been taught music, is that you try to do the best possible out of respect for the composer.
Are you a musician??
-
The core of good music isn't what is being played or how complex it is or how fast but how it is played. Stir it up from Bob marley is the perfect example. It are just 3 chords the whole fucking song but only the way how it is played, the timing and the feel makes it how it is. Good technique can sometimes even sterelize the music. Serious, technique is NOT an essential in music, you need technique because you will proberbly fuck op your wrists or something after playing 25 years.
-
hmmm. You DON'T need good technique to play the best music in the world. Music isn't about how WELL it is played, it is about HOW it is played. There are people who study for 25 years everyday who can play the fastest riffs but just can't make real music (as far as we can agree on music) but a homeless guy who can only play 3 chords can make 100x better music. Technique isn't essential for a musician but if you want to play for 40 years it is handy.

??
"It isn't about the skill"
I have to disagree about this.
I mean, it is about soul, or expressing emotions. But to do that effectively you NEED Skill (good technique).
This guy has good technique. He needs to get a better quality recording. I didn't find this performance moving in anything like the way I find Eric moving.
It needs MORE soul.

Korg i believe

Awsome! better than I can do it, pretty soon my fingernails will grow back
-
For some reason it just doesn't do the same for me as Erik. Doesn't sound like it has the soul in it.

Nice, only the quality is a bit low. But it doesn't make your preformance less because that is great:)
