Based on four poems by Federico Garcia Lorca

Spanish translation

I. Cancion del jinete (Song of the Horseman)
Soloists: Tom Fairbanks, tenor and Paul Teipe, bass

Cordoba.
Distant and alone.
Black mare, big moon,
and olives in my saddlebag.
Although I were to know the pathes,
I will never arrive at Cordoba.
Through the plain, through the wind,
black mare, red moon.
Death is watchign me
from the towers of Cordoba.
Oh, what a long path!
Oh, my valient mare!
Oh, how death waits for me,
before arriving at Cordoba!
Cordoba.
Distant and alone.

II. El Grito (The Scream)

The eclipse of a scream
resousning echoes
moutnatin to mountain.

risting form the olive trees
is a rainbow black
as darkness over a night of deep blue.

Ay!

Like the bow of a viola,
the scream has drawn out
the vibrations of the wind and its music.

Ay!

(the people of the caves
put on their long veils)

Ay!

III. La luna asoma (The moon rises)
Soloist: Meghan Guse, soprano

When the moon comes out,
the sound of the church bells is lost
and impenetrable
paths appear.

When the moon comes out,
teh sea covers the earth
and the heart feels like
an island in the infinity.

No one eats oranges
under the full moon.
the right fruits to eat
are green and cold.

When the moon comes out
with a hundred faces all the same,
the silver coins
sob in their pocket.

IV. Malaguena

Death
comes and goes
from the tavern.

Black horses
and sinister people
pass, moving as to the deep chords
of the guitar.

And there is an odor of salt
and of the blood of a woman
amid the feverish muskroot flowers
along the seaside.

Death
comes and goes
and goes and comes
from the tavern.
